Kangra town is the historic heart of the district. Its defining landmark is Kangra Fort, a vast hill fort above the Banganga and Manjhi rivers, while the nearby Brajeshwari Devi Temple anchors the town’s living devotional culture. Use it as a base for heritage-focused days and short drives across the central valley.

Tibetan culture beneath the Dhauladhar
Dharamshala moves from a busy lower town into the cooler, more contemplative streets of McLeodganj. Monasteries, prayer wheels, Tibetan food, mountain cafés, and trailheads make this the district’s most cosmopolitan base. It is also the easiest place to combine culture with a day in the hills.

Green slopes, quiet roads & mountain views
Palampur is Kangra at its most unhurried. Tea estates line the approach, the Dhauladhar peaks dominate clear mornings, and nearby villages lead toward Baijnath, Tashi Jong, and Bir. It is a strong choice for travellers who want scenic drives, gentle walks, and a quieter stay.

Flight, forest & monastery trails
Bir is the landing town for the famous Billing paragliding site, but it is more than an adventure stop. Tibetan settlements, monasteries, forest roads, and a relaxed café scene make it a rewarding base even when you are not flying. The drive here from Palampur is part of the experience.

Context matters
For centuries, Kangra was associated with the Katoch dynasty, one of the oldest surviving royal lineages in the world. Their power is written into Kangra Fort, but the valley’s heritage is equally visible in its temple traditions, miniature painting, and the routes pilgrims have followed across the foothills. In the twentieth century, Dharamshala became a global centre of Tibetan culture, adding another living layer to the district’s identity.
